Dupnitsa (Doupnitsa) is situated at the north-western foot of Rila Mountain at 510 meters elevation, on the banks of German River, which springs from the Seven Rila Lakes. The town is on sixty-nine kilometers south of Sofia, thirty-three km north of Blagoevgrad, thirty-eight km south of Kyustendil, and forty km west of Samokov.
Dupnitsa has a long history - the first traces of inhabitants here date it back to the 14th century. The name of the town is mentioned in the diary of the knight Arnold von Harf who visited Bulgaria in the distant 1499.
Some places of interest here include the ruins of the medieval fortress Koulata, The Town Museum of History, an old clock tower from 1782, the Holly Virgin Church from 1789, St. Nikola Church, etc.
The Accommodation in Dupnitsa is mainly presented by Hotel Rila, but also modern hotels can be found in the famous nearby resorts of Sapareva Banya and Panichishte.
Doupnitsa is situated on the international motor and railway lines Sofia - Kulata - Athens. There are frequent buses to Sofia and Sapareva Banya (about on every hour). There are also regular bus lines to Bansko, Rila Monastery, Blagoevgrad, Razlog, Kyustendil, Pernik, and all the smaller villages in the area.
